Making good nutrition and preventative healthcare taste great

Carritech’s ColdBake technology can deliver entirely new ranges of sweet and savoury baked foods capable of carrying heat sensitive ingredients that can provide health, nutrition and medicinal benefits.
Imagine:

Snacks packed with nutrients

Consumers don’t (or can’t) always make the most nutritious food choices and usually default to taste over nutritional value. So doesn’t it make sense to make snacks full of active nutrients? Imagine: nutrient filled foods that taste as great as your favourite biscuits or savoury snacks. Sounds like a great idea!

Unfortunately, there’s a problem with this idea: normal baking destroys many nutrients and bioactive ingredients, so incorporating them into popular foods like biscuits and snacks has been impractical – until now.

Patented ColdBake technology

A recognised challenge in the functional foods sector is the retention of heat sensitive nutritional ingredients during the process of manufacturing genuinely enjoyable snack foods. Conventional processes such as baking subject these ingredients to temperatures which are liable to damage or destroy them.

Carritech’s proprietary ColdBake process, however, enables crunchy foods and ‘intermediate ingredients’ to be produced at much lower temperatures than normal baking, thereby preserving the functional properties of temperature sensitive ingredients in a way that was just not possible before.

a wide range of potential applications

NUTRITION SUPPORT FOR SENIORS

NUTRITION SUPPORT FOR SENIORS

Getting older means considering the changing nutritional needs of the body as it seeks to adapt to advancing years. For example, vitamins D, B12, C and iron are all recommended for sustained health in the elderly population. By using Carritech’s technology to incorporate these heat sensitive ingredients into a tasty snack, the opportunity exists to make vital nutrients more accessible to this key demographic.

NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN

NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN

A pack of crunchy snacks using ColdBake technology can, for example, be formulated to contain a day’s worth of Omega 3s and vitamin C – an ideal supplement for children who lack the balanced diet necessary to provide their full nutritional requirements.

CANCER SUPPORTIVE CARE FOODS

CANCER SUPPORTIVE CARE FOODS

Patients with debilitating illnesses such as cancer suffer poor nutrition and are in dire need of nutritional supplements in their diet. A palatable, high energy snack containing key nutrients would be of huge benefit to a large group of patients with an immediate need.

Solutions for under-nutrition

Solutions for under-nutrition

With ColdBake, we can formulate snack bars loaded with pre-mixes of nutrients for regions of the world where under-nutrition is rife – or for emergency nutrition applications.

PET AND LIVESTOCK MEDICINES

PET AND LIVESTOCK MEDICINES

Getting pets and livestock to consume important medicines such as antibiotics in food is often very difficult. By incorporating sensitive ingredients into tasty snacks, compliance and control of drugs can be taken care of easily and efficiently.
ColdBake

Proof of concept

Extensive independent testing has shown that ColdBake passes ‘bio-availability’ testing with flying colours – meaning that any added nutrients are available to be absorbed by the body when eaten as part of one of our snacks. We have developed concept prototypes including enhanced biscuits and breakfast cereals, sports nutrition snacks and nutrient-blend biscuits to combat under-nutrition.

Market opportunities

Carritech’s ColdBake technology can be applied to transform the delivery of nutrients and medicines across a number of global markets. In making the technology available through licensing, Carritech is in a position to avail of the opportunities residing across all these multi-billion dollar markets.

Licensing

Carritech’s patented technology is available for licensing across the food and pharmaceutical sectors to carefully selected partners. We anticipate that applications will include:
FOOD FOR HUMANS
ColdBake is flexible: snack products, breakfast cereals, biscuits, lifestyle and sports nutrition products and weight management products, containing, vitamins, bio-actives, proteins and dietary fibre.
ANIMAL PRODUCTS
ColdBake’s has a wide range of potential application within the sector: pet foods, commercial animal feeds and veterinary products containing heat sensitive nutrients or medicines.
PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS
ColdBake technology makes possible new ranges of over-the-counter medicines, including children’s medicines, and opens up the possibility of vaccines that can be delivered in highly palatable forms.

Carritech’s management team balances strong sectoral experience with high-calibre technical capability. Carritech works with its clients to co-develop applications. A licence to the ColdBake technology can then be granted and the technology transferred to the client with ongoing support from Carritech’s technical team.
